new music now playing currently listening playlist music pop alternative

It's been ages since I did a little music update on what tracks I've been listening to lately, and to be honest, I've only bought one album this entire year which is a little shoddy given that I'm much better off financially than I was last year and I told myself I'd buy way more albums in 2017. It's now March and the only thing I've bought is Charli XCX's Sucker album, an offering which, whilst I enjoy it, just isn't really all that I wanted it to be. I'm hoping to pick up a new album next payday though, and it may or may not be by a certain 'cake'-loving band mentioned below...

(Also, I'm in love with the photo above, so chuffed with it!)

If you're new here and haven't read up on my Heartbreaker Playlist series, you may have missed the fact that I'm a big Backstreet Boys fan. HUGE, actually. I Tweet about them a lot and have even admitted on Twitter that my first dance song at my wedding has to be to their lush ballad 'Drowning' from the 90s. It's non-negotiable, and nothing I can say will make you guys understand how much I adore and appreciate them. Make Believe is a track from the boys' 2013 release In a World Like This, which I admit took me quite a while to get into. There are some incredible tracks on it, and for me, this is one of the best. The lyrics, the vocals, the music. They can never do anything wrong, but this song just stole my heart upon first listen.

Whilst Sucker wasn't what I expected it to be - I knew it wasn't going to be another pure pop-driven album like True Romance -, that doesn't mean I didn't like it. There are a lot of tracks on it that I adore, it's just that overall it didn't hook me in like previous Charli records have. One of my faves from the album is Body of My Own and I feel like only Charli could make such a fun song about masturbation that's as equally empowering. I get this one stuck in my head after every time I listen to it, but it's so catchy that I don't mind.

First I was obsessed with Cake by the Ocean, now I'm obsessed with Toothbrush. I am very, very late to the party with DNCE. I heard Cake by the Ocean when it first came out and enjoyed it, but when I wasn't hearing it on the radio, I pretty much forgot about it. At first I actually thought it was by The Weeknd or some random boy band, but when I decided to look it up using the lyrics that I knew, I was gobsmacked to watch the video and find out it was Joe Jonas of all people. This song is awesome tho, and super catchy - my fave.

In recent weeks I've been having a bit of a Nickelback moment. They're a band I grew to like as my older brother is a fan and has a lot of their albums, and they're definitely one of my favourites even though I don't keep up with them with a lot of dedication, and just get round to new releases when I feel like it. Personally, I don't know why there's so much hate surrounding them. Is it because they're an otherwise heavy band who can also pull off beautiful love ballads or...? Because I don't see that as a bad thing. Anyway, Never Again is one of my favourite songs and I'm not all that sure why given that it's about domestic violence so it's not the cheeriest, but it's just a killer track I'd love to see live and it has hints of nostalgia because I listened to the Silver Side Up album repeatedly when I was a kid.

At one point in my teens I was pretty obsessed with Chase & Status, after a former friend and crush at the time became hooked on them and I gave them a shot too (bcos when you're 16/17 that's what you do, you start liking all the things the person you like likes, obv). I actually really liked a lot of their album No More Idols, and I still do to this day, with my favourite off the album probably being this track which features the rich, velvety tones of White Lies. At the age I was and with the extent of my depression, I related to the lyrics of this a lot: this town's alright / but it's not enough / I'm looking for a quick exit / like a prisoner on the run. All I wanted to do was escape with the boy I fancied, and relied on for shots of happiness, in tow, in what I imagined to be a very romantic, sneaky, secret situation that was actually a lot more innocent than it sounds (bcos ew, sex with boys was gross at that age).
