new music now playing playlist music pop alternative

Wow, it's been a while, hasn't it?! The first instalment of The Now Playing Playlist was done last December - time flies! I actually didn't plan on doing another of these this year - it was just the way my schedules worked out, and because I was taking on new album after new album, I didn't have varied favourite tracks to share with you, just loads from one album at a time! However, in August I had some extra money so splashed out on Carly Rae Jepsen's latest album, at last, as well as bunch of 80's songs and some new and old tracks I'd heard a lot on the radio lately. So, it seemed like the perfect time to share some new music with you!

So, Jack pretty much always listens to Absolute Radio in the car, like, always - which is fine with me, as I'm not fond of radio stations so this is kinda the lesser of all the evils. Absolute Radio plays a lot of Franz Ferdinand, Weezer, Kaiser Chiefs, RHCP, Keane, as well as a ton of other good bands - and some shitty musicians (why is Jake Bugg a thing? AWFUL), and I was totally taken aback when they announced they were going to play Kaiser Chief's new single and this popped on the radio. Now, don't get me wrong, it's been a while since I listened to KC - like, around the 'Ruby' era. For one, it took my ears ages to recognise Ricky Wilson's voice, and whilst after a few listens it became really obvious that that was still his voice, it was still bizarre as all hell at first cos I was like... Is this the same man? The song struck as me as being a bit like something The Killers would make as well, although this later wore off. And the weirdest part? This feels like a pop song. I'm not the only one who thinks so, whilst there are obviously a lot of criticisms about the sound on the video for this track, I saw someone make the comparison that they were straying totally from their original sound like Maroon 5 did. But here's the thing - Kaiser Chief's are doing it right, whereas I stopped taking Maroon 5 seriously as a band ever since they released Moves Like Jagger and failed to redeem themselves with their fourth album. (Obv this is all down to my opinion). I love every second of this song.

RHCP aren't a band I've ever been particularly fond of. I liked a couple of their songs when I was younger, you know the ones, like Californiacation and stuff, but that was kind of it. I always felt they were a bit overrated... But as I mentioned above, Jack always has Absolute Radio on so when this song came out in August it was played usually several times a day, outside of their 'no repeat guarantee' anyway, and the more I heard it, the more I liked it. I love the bass line, and I'm actually really fond of the vocals and the way the whole thing works together. I can't put my finger on it, but I love it!

I loved this song as a kid & teen, but I lost it from my hoard of MP3 downloads so I recently got it again after hearing it, yup, you guessed it, on Absolute Radio, hahah, so I've sort of been re-loving it all over again. I don't really listen to Weezer but I'm thinking about getting the album this is from, as I imagine all the tracks are just as bad ass and awesome as this - even if they won't have the same sense of nostalgia attached!

I've been a huge fan of Carly Rae Jepsen from the get-go, her debut album Kiss was the stuff pop dreams are made of. If you've heard the lead single 'I Really Like You' (in which Tom Hanks stars in the video, SO CUTE) from Carly's follow-up album E-MO-TIONS, you won't be surprised to hear that that this album is no different and is still as pop-filled as ever. I'm taking my time in adjusting to this one, but I heard this track playing in a bar when Jack and I were in Turkey earlier this year and it got stuck in my head, so I Googled the lyrics when we got back to the apartment and I was like OH, how could I not have realised it was Carly Rae Jepsen?! This is definitely my favourite from the album so far, it's so catchy, and so god damn good. How this wasn't a bigger single here in the UK is beyond me.

If you keep up with me on Twitter, you may have noticed last month I was talking about an 80s playlist (I also talked about a link to Absolute Radio's Best of 80s playlist, ha). I really enjoy a lot of 80s music, something that has stemmed both from my parents' love of the likes of Duran Duran, Hall & Oates, as well as David Bowie, of course, and also something that grew due to my own love of the TV show Ashes to Ashes. I generally love 80s music because of how pop driven it is, and this track by Hall & Oates is one of my favourites. Weirdly enough, my mum recently got one of their albums and is listening to it on repeat! (I think it's like a Best Of compilation album). I actually started listening to this song because it was on the Saints Row 2 soundtrack, and whilst I vaguely knew it before then, it was that game that made me go 'oh, I really like this', and I ended up downloading it along with a bunch of other 80s tracks from Amazon - I'd have got even more if my money wasn't so limited!

What have you guys been listening to lately?
