Things I Don't Look for in a Blog

blogging don'ts, things i don't look for in a blog, things not to do on your blog, tips, beginners

Okay, first let's address the fact that I feel like a bit of a dick writing a post like this. Like, I'm not a big blogger, I don't have much success as such to be validating people's blog's with my seal of approval. But that's not the intention of this post. I know it's quite a popular topic for bloggers to share what they enjoy about other people's blogs, and what they don't, so I thought I'd throw my two cents in because I really enjoyed writing this. I'm not saying that because you do this, your blog is shit. These are just some of the things that tend to turn me away from reading a blog, and it's such a personal thing - each to their own!

GRAINY PHOTOS IN DIM LIGHTING

I'll be the first to admit I'm no photography expert. I spent my first 18 months of blogging with several low-level pixel cameras, and my phone, which is what I relied on the most. I LOVE my phone camera for being a phone camera. At 13megapixels, it's pretty fucking ace. But in little lighting, I have never seen such grainy photos, no matter what settings I play around with. Grainy photos generally always come hand in hand with dim-lighting. You don't need a super fancy DSLR for taking nice photos, just make sure to take them in bright, natural daylight on a clear background. Fiddle around with your camera to adjust any brightness settings. I recommend not using your flash. A nice flatlay works wonders when you don't have much space to experiment with as well.

AN UNORGANISED LAYOUT

I realise not everyone likes the minimalist chic thing that dominates a lot of blogs - including my own - these days. Not everyone is into monochrome. That's perfectly fine. But it's a real eye-catcher for me. If your layout is all over the place with mess, clutter, and twenty different fonts with a further thirty different shades, I'll probably hit that 'close' button. Also make sure your layout fits correctly and that your header, if it's an image, has been cut to size.

A LACK OF DETAILED INFORMATION

Please explain to me why you do or don't like this product. Why did you pick up the product you just bought? I'm always disappointed when I read a review only to be told what I already know in the space of a small paragraph. What's the texture like? The staying power? Does it have a scent to it? Details are important! If you're discussing a pair of boots or a new lipstick, I want the low-down.

POP-UPS

An immediate pop-up asking me to subscribe is literally the biggest way for me to close without giving your blog a chance. I know this is a very popular thing to do amongst companies as well as bloggers, but it's such a no-no for me. I want to be able to explore your corner of the internet uninterrupted, and if you must add that pop-up, please delay it for a few minutes until I get my bearings - thank you!

I hate adding disclaimers, because obviously this is my blog, and I'm writing an opinion, so please take it with a pinch of salt! That said, I'll write a bit of a disclaimer anyway... Again, this was not meant as an offensive or bashy post. These are just a few of the things that can really make me hit the exit button in the top corner of my screen and not look back, like I said, I just wanted to add my opinion into the mix as this can be quite a popular topic amongst fellow bloggers! The most important part of blogging, and, let's face it, life, is to stay true to who you are. So if you want a colourful theme, then by all means, do it. There comes a limit to pleasing others with your content. Yes, as a blogger you want people to read what you write, but it's your passion and voice that need to be the biggest focus of your blog, and those are the things, combined with you being you, that will bring you loyal readers that will stick around because they want to see and hear and read more of you! (I'm no expert, this is just how I think it works haha).
